Animal Energetics Lab

How do animals and humans manage their energy reserves ?

Energy stores are biochemically varied (lipids, carbohydrates and proteins), and strategically located (adipose tissue, liver, muscle). Our goal is to understand the regulation of metabolic fuel selection from these multiple sources of energy to support locomotion, heat production, and ultimately survival. We are presently investigating two major topics:

  1. The physiological mechanisms used by champions of hypoxia tolerance like goldfish and naked mole rats to achieve deep metabolic suppression in low-oxygen environments.

  2. Metabolic fuel selection in rainbow trout.
