Animal Energetics Lab

How do animals manage their energy reserves ?

Energy stores are biochemically varied (lipids, carbohydrates and proteins), and strategically located in the organism (adipose tissue, liver, muscle). Our goal is to characterize the regulation of metabolic fuel selection from these multiple sources to support locomotion, heat production, and ultimately survival. We are presently investigating the physiological mechanisms used by champions of hypoxia tolerance like goldfish and naked mole rats to achieve deep metabolic suppression in low-oxygen environments.
